All About Bremerton, WA
- by Jodie Vinson
Bremerton's unique waterfront that now attracts visitors and locals alike was occasion for its founding. When the town was originally established in 1891, William Bremer, a German immigrant, had entrepreneurial plans for its potential as a naval shipyard. A commission had already chosen the waters of the Sinclair and Dyes Inlet as an ideal spot for navy operations. These visions were realized and the town boomed during World War II around the workings of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
While Camp McKean still operates as home to naval officers and their families, today the citys waterfront is being put toward more peaceful and pleasurable purposes. The Bremerton Marina was newly renovated, and opened on May 1, 2008 to allow visitors to walk along the new breakwater and enjoy the shops, restaurants and art galleries that populate the area. Gardens and parks flourish along its waters, while the military and shipyard history can still be viewed in museums or toured on one of the preserved historical ships such as the USS Turner Joy.
The city of Bremerton continues to prize and promote the attractions of its waterfront. Plans are underway for a 3,400 foot long boardwalk over the shoreline waters of the town. The boardwalk would run from Evergreen Park to the Harborside District, where it would connect with the Louis Mentor Boardwalk. The project would continue to develop Bremertons already prospering waterfront experience awaiting visitors to the peninsula.
