All About Port Orchard, WA
- by Jodie Vinson
Port Orchard is an authentic mid-century Norhtwest town that is centered around the seashore. Its numerous marinas draw boaters and water lovers alike. The waterfront features a boardwalk and gazebo that functions both as a community meeting place and as pleasant space for quiet walks. The nearby historic downtown district hosts a variety of merchants and eateries catering to the local community. Lying directly across Sinclair Inlet, Port Orchard is easily accessible by foot ferry from Bremerton.
Established in the late 1800's as a costal lumber town, Port Orchard was originally called Sidney, named after one of the founding settler's fathers. The name was eventually changed in honor of Harry Masterman Orchard, ships clerk on the exploration vessel Discovery whom the adjoining bay was named for. The community grew as many of its residents were employed at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Orchard Bay. The city rose in importance as it became the Kitsap County seat.
