Things to do in Gig Harbor, Washington

The life of Gig Harbors past and present community can be discovered with a walk through its historic downtown district along the waterfront. Heritage markers guide visitors down Harborview Drive where the fishing industry on which the town was founded still thrives. The Minter Creek Salmon Hatchery in the north is also open to visitors wishing to explore this foundational aspect of the community.

To experience Gig Harbor is to get out on its harbor, and there are plenty of opportunities to do so. There are several public boat launches along the protected waters prime for sailing, wind surfing, and kayaking. Take in the surrounding scenery with views of the harbor and mountains on View Climb in the Finholm District. Much of this natural beauty has been preserved in state parks scattered throughout the Gig Harbor area that allow visitors to hike, beachcomb, boat and camp for a more intimate experience of the landscape. Gig Harbors rural past can be experienced in the farms and gardens of Rosedale and Fox Island, and in the tiny village of Home, still populated by descendants of the original utopian community.

The richness of the community is evident in the many events and exhibitions that annually celebrate Gig Harbors natural resources and cultural history. Along with a monthly farmers market and art walks, visitors wont want to miss the June Maritime Festival or Septembers Heritage Row, celebrations that honor the past riding on the waters of the harbor.
