All About Grapeview, WA
- by Jodie Vinson
The tiny community of Grapeview maintains the seclusion that first appealed to its founding father, Lambert Evans. Evans arrived from Florida in 1872, bringing with him cuttings from grapevines he gathered in his travels. Recognizing the area as an ideal landscape for grape growing, Evans planted what was one of the first vineyards that now cover the Northwest Coast. He lived alone for eleven years, rowing over twenty miles to Olympia to sell his crop. The lone settler was soon joined by others who recognized the charm of Grapeviews setting, populating the mainland and the islands opposite, then known as Stretch and Reach Islands. Grapeview was originally called Detroit, but was renamed for its heritage as the home of the first winery in the Western Washington, and the striking views still afforded by this tranquil waterfront community.
