All About Purdy, WA
- by Jodie Vinson
Purdy is located on the Carr Inlet, its sandspit extending into and dividing Burley Lagoon from Henderson Bay. It is known for its easy beach access along the spit and its locally produced oysters and clams. Purdy was established in the 1880s and grew with a sawmill that supplied the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton with lumber. A chute was established in its streets to transport the logs down hill to the water. The community was named for a Tacoma businessman who gave materials for the first schoolhouse. The town continues to provide a welcoming stop between Gig Harbor and the rest of the Kitsap Peninsula.
