The community of Shelton offers visitors the welcoming atmosphere of a small coastal lumber town. Its downtown has a hand full of antique stores, thrift shops, variety boutiques and dinners. With a large modern sawmill dominating most of it's waterfront, Shelton is first and foremost a working mill town.
Once a year, Shelton hosts the internationally acclaimed Oysterfest - a culinary extravaganza celebrating the slimy little jewels of the South Puget Sound. Kayakers can easily reach for there own oysters as they paddle along the muddy shores of Oakland Bay.
On Railroad Avenue the Mason County Historical Museum documents the towns early logging history. The Oakland Bay Marina gives guests ready access to the calm waters of Hammersly Inlet. Another favorite water activity involves walking along a creek that winds through Sheltons historic timber baron neighborhood. Visitors can stroll alongside migrating salmon during spawning season in late summer as they swim through the clear waters of the towns central creek.
