Things to do in Steilacoom, WA
As one of the oldest established communities in the Northwest, the small town maintains strong bonds of community rooted in it's tranquil setting. Adorned with a few if it's historic buildings, Steilacoom has some of the oldest residences in the state including Bair Drug and Hardware (since 1895), the Nathaniel Orr Home (constructed in 1857). These structures are marked by plaques of origin and can be viewed on a historical walking tour of the town. Visitors can learn more about state history at the Steilacoom Historical Museum. Travel back in time before the town's establishment with a visit to the Steilacoom Tribal Center and Museum, exhibiting the area's Native American heritage.
For recreation, walk the trails in Fort Steilacoom park, play a round of golf at the new Chambers Bay Golf Course, or ride the Anderson Island Ferry through the peaceful waters of the South Sound. There is limited beach access due to the railroad tracks running along the waterfront, but you can easily slip a kayak in or launch a small trailer boat from the boat launch next to the ferry landing. Every summer the community celebrates its watery roots along the shores of the Sound with the salmon bake at Sunnyside Beach Park.
