<title>Saturday, September 11th, 2010 - Way of the Qin: An Exhibition on the Ancient Chinese Zither </title>
				      <link>http://www.pugetsoundmagazine.com/events/index.php&#63;com=detail&amp;eID=1349</link>
<description>Rare Exhibit on the Ancient Chinese Zither

Way of the Qin &#8212; Guqin and Nourishing Life: An Exhibition on the Ancient Chinese Zither will feature over 50 items illustrating Chinese culture and philosophy. The exhibit will be open each weekend (Saturdays and Sundays, 1pm to 5pm) from April&#8212;October 2010 at the Seattle home of the presenting organization, the Taoist Studies Institute. The Taoist Studies Institute is located at 225 North 70th Street, in the Greenwood neighborhood. Accompanying the exhibit will be a rich array of educational public programs [see below], as well as related items available for sale (art, books, and Chinese scholars stones). While donations are welcome, the exhibition is free to the public.
The Qin, now commonly known as Guqin &#8212;Ancient Zither&#8212; has been played in China for over two thousand years. A common theme in Chinese painting, poetry and literature, the Guqin is an integral part of Chinese culture and is one of the most refined of the arts of the Chinese scholar. Known as the instrument of sages, from ancient times the Qin has been used as a medium of cultivation and nourishing life. The instrument is designed according to cosmic principles and made from materials chosen to enhance its ability to resonate with nature and touch the heart. It is the first of the four arts of the Chinese scholar: Qin, Qi (a game best known in the west by the Japanese name Go), Calligraphy and Painting. A Chinese scholars studio was not complete without a Qin or a representation of a Qin.
An exploration of the rich heritage of the Qin tradition with special emphasis on its relationship to cultivation and nourishing life, the exhibition includes paintings, calligraphy, rubbings, scholars objects &#8212;&#8212; as well as examples of the Guqin. A collection of scholars stones, fascinating and unusual stones cherished within classical Chinese culture, will also be on display. Few exhibits on the Guqin have been held in North America, the most notable being Resonance of the Qin in East Asian Art, held at the China Institute in New York, NY (1999).

The Way of the Qin exhibition will be accompanied by an array of public programs that focus on Chinese and Taoist culture. These will include lectures, multi&#8212;media programs, concerts performed on the Guqin and workshops on calligraphy, painting and qigong. The details of these events will be announced in the future on the website of the Taoist Studies Institute [www.taoiststudiesinstitute.org]. This rare exhibit will intrigue and fascinate a diverse audience including:
appreciators of Chinese culture, music, poetry, painting and classical Chinese gardens
those who experience the spiritual power of nature
students of Asian culture, Chinese medicine, Tai Chi or Qigong
Harrison Moretz, Director of the Taoist Studies Institute and an expert in Taoist cultivation and internal martial arts, is curating the exhibition. The Taoist Studies Institute, a non&#8212;profit educational organization founded in Seattle in 1991, is a place for people to deepen their understanding and practice of Taoist tradition and culture. The Institutes curriculum offers a strong foundation in Taoist cultivation and energetic awareness through a combination of practices including movement and meditation (such as Qigong and Tai Chi), philosophy, and traditional medicine and arts. For more information call the Taoist Studies Institute at (206) 784&#8212;5632 or email info@taoiststudiesinstitute.org.
